Happy Birthday Ruby Kate- A Beautiful Home Birth Story

As an Atlanta area birth photographer, I love having all kinds of different client experiences, and this one was a first. When I arrived at my client’s home, I had to do a double, and maybe triple, take at the address I had to make sure I was at the right place, because the home I arrived at was having a very active yard sale out front. I was met by my client’s father-in-law who told me she was inside expecting me, and sure enough I walked in and found her leaning and swaying through contractions in the comfort of her living room.

Once she had a momentary break she said, “If anyone wants another trick to go into labor, just have a yard sale.” It gave us all a little laugh, but the activity outside wasn’t phasing her one bit. She stayed calm and focused and once the team from Birthing Way midwifery got there, we all knew that this family would be meeting their new daughter very soon.

Everyone who I’ve talked to who has had a home birth always talks about how much they’ve loved being surrounded by their own comforts of home. This birth was no different. The birth pool was set up in front of a beautiful window off of the living room, framed scripture verses and other birth affirmations filled the walls and reminded us all of how JOYOUS birth is.

It was beautiful to watch her husband support her while she labored. He would lean in and whisper something to her, offer a hand or a strong place to lean. I never quite made out what he was saying to her, but you could sense her taking his assistance and using it to bring their daughter closer and closer to their arms.

The team of Rachel and Jaimy from Birthing Way was also simply amazing. Their words offered guidance and reminders to this mama that she was doing a wonderful job. They knew that she would know what to do and when, and they encouraged her to reach down with her hand and guide her baby out. Seeing a woman so safely supported and loved during her birth is truly heart-warming and a powerfully beautiful reminder of what home birth offers.

Once baby Ruby Kate arrived, she and her mother were helped to her bedroom where they could begin the golden hour of bonding time as a family. They noticed her beautiful head of hair, her chunky little baby rolls and her sweet fingers and toes. After skin to skin with mom came baby’s exam and then getting held and cuddled by dad. Lot and lots of love for this sweet little one.

I’m so honored that I was able to capture these memories for such a beautiful family. I hope they enjoy looking back on them to remember what a joyous and special day this was. Welcome to the world sweet girl!
